Construction of the Hydropower Plant Dabar in Republika Srpska has progressed significantly, entering its final phase with commissioning anticipated in 2027. The project is poised to enhance electricity production and bolster energy security in the region, reflecting a broader trend towards renewable energy development in Southeast Europe.
Petar Djokić, the Energy and Mining Minister, confirmed that most of the technically complex aspects of the construction have been finalized. The current focus is on completing remaining construction tasks and installing essential equipment to prepare the facility for electricity generation.
A substantial portion of the plant’s electromechanical equipment is already on-site, indicating that preparations for operational readiness are well underway. HPP Dabar is expected to play a pivotal role in increasing energy output and ensuring long-term energy stability in Republika Srpska.
Luka Petrović, Director of Elektroprivreda Republike Srpske, reported that the construction of a 12.1-kilometer water intake tunnel is nearing completion, with final works scheduled to conclude by early September. However, additional funding will be necessary to complete land expropriation in the Nevesinje field area.
To finalize the expropriation process, approximately 25 million euros will be required to relocate 25 households from the project zone. Authorities are actively seeking further financial resources to meet this requirement, which underscores the financial complexities involved in large-scale infrastructure projects.
With an installed capacity of 160 MW, HPP Dabar is recognized as one of the largest energy investments currently underway in the region. It stands out as one of the few significant hydropower projects initiated in recent years within the former Yugoslavia, highlighting Republika Srpska’s strategic positioning in renewable energy development.
Officials anticipate that the project will not only strengthen the financial health of the national power utility but also contribute to maintaining stable electricity prices for consumers. Danilo Ilić, Director of the HPP Dabar project company, emphasized that this year is critical for advancing construction efforts, which will soon shift towards building canals and transmission infrastructure while installing hydro-mechanical equipment.
