The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is currently assessing a significant financial proposal aimed at enhancing the electricity distribution network in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The potential funding, amounting to a sovereign-backed loan of up to 38 million euros, is intended for Elektrokrajina, a distribution utility that operates under the umbrella of the state-owned Elektroprivreda Republike Srpske (ERS).

This proposed financing is part of a larger infrastructure initiative, with an estimated total cost of approximately 43.2 million euros. The primary focus of this project is the modernization of critical segments within the electricity distribution system, specifically targeting medium- and low-voltage networks as well as substations.

The upgrades are designed to enhance both the reliability and quality of electricity supply while simultaneously tackling technical losses that currently affect the distribution network. A crucial aspect of this initiative is its alignment with the growing need to integrate decentralized renewable energy sources into the grid, which is increasingly vital for supporting sustainable energy transitions in the region.

By improving infrastructure capabilities, the project aims to facilitate better accommodation of distributed generation technologies, such as solar power installations, which are gaining traction in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s energy landscape.

As per documentation from EBRD, this financing proposal is under active consideration, with a decision anticipated by mid-May. Should it receive approval, the EBRD board could finalize the loan on May 13.
