Romanian hydropower producer Hidroelectrica reported a total shareholder return of approximately 141% over the three years since its listing on the Bucharest Stock Exchange. The figure combines a share-price increase with cumulative dividend payments. The company’s results were tied to performance in the period following the July 2023 initial public offering.
By early July 2026, Hidroelectrica’s shares reached a record €41.80 equivalent. This level corresponded to a capital gain of 111.5% since the July 2023 IPO. Cumulative dividends of approximately €5.80 per share lifted the reported total return to around 141%.
Market value growth and shareholder expansion
Hidroelectrica’s market capitalisation rose from approximately €8.9 billion at listing to €18.8 billion, more than doubling over three years. The company also increased its shareholder base by 39%. That brought the number of shareholders to around 57,000, reflecting its role in Romania’s domestic equity market development.
The 2023 transaction was described as the largest European IPO of that year and the third largest globally. It provided international investors access to one of Southeast Europe’s most valuable renewable-generation portfolios. It also strengthened the depth and visibility of the Bucharest Stock Exchange.
Hydrology pressures and share-price resilience
The share-price performance occurred despite difficult hydrological conditions. In particular, 2025 was described as the weakest hydrological year in three decades. This placed pressure on generation volumes and increased the importance of portfolio optimisation and commercial trading.
Hydropower earnings are exposed to rainfall, reservoir levels and river inflows. Strong returns during a weak hydrological period indicate that investors focused on factors including Hidroelectrica’s balance sheet, low-carbon generation base, dividend capacity and position in Romania’s electricity market rather than relying only on short-term production growth.
Rising capex and programme scope
Capital expenditure increased sharply across recent years. Hidroelectrica invested €39 million in 2023, €112 million in 2024 and €148 million in 2025. For 2026, the investment allocation is €266 million, which is 82% higher than the previous year and nearly seven times the level recorded in 2023.
The programme includes hydropower modernisation, unfinished hydro projects, storage, digitalisation and new renewable assets. The acquisition of UCM Reșița added engineering and maintenance capabilities. This was described as potentially giving Hidroelectrica greater control over refurbishment schedules and technical performance.
Execution focus for commissioned capacity and availability
The investment acceleration is linked to how Hidroelectrica’s valuation depends on turning its balance sheet into durable generation growth. Modernising ageing hydro assets can deliver additional output and flexibility with lower development risk than entirely new projects, while storage can increase hydropower value as solar-driven intraday volatility rises .
The next phase is expected to be assessed based on execution of the €266 million capital programme rather than IPO outcomes . The key elements highlighted include converting budget allocations into commissioned capacity and improving operational availability.
