Greece initiates 600 MW renewable energy tender under Apollo program

Greece has commenced a significant procurement cycle aimed at boosting its renewable energy landscape, launching competitive tenders for a total capacity of 600 MW as part of the Apollo program’s first phase. This initial tender allocates 400 MW for onshore wind projects and 200 MW for solar energy initiatives, reflecting the country’s commitment to enhancing its clean energy generation capabilities.

Interested developers are required to submit their applications by March 16. The evaluation process for the projects is scheduled to conclude by April 29, with preliminary results expected the next day and final awards anticipated by May 7. This timeline provides a structured framework for stakeholders looking to engage in Greece’s expanding renewable sector.

The eligibility criteria differ based on technology type. Wind farms with capacities exceeding 60 kW are eligible to participate, with a bid price ceiling set at 75 euros/MWh. In contrast, solar projects can bid up to 80 euros/MWh, and the tender accommodates both conventional solar installations and hybrid setups that integrate battery storage, promoting adaptability in power generation.

Commissioning deadlines have been clearly defined as well. Solar projects awarded contracts must connect to the national grid by the end of 2027, while selected wind projects are mandated to commence commercial operations by September 30, 2028. These deadlines are crucial for ensuring that new renewable capacity is delivered in a timely manner.

The auction process will adopt a streamlined single-round format, necessitating that developers submit both technical and financial proposals at once. Successful bidders will be granted 20-year contracts for difference (CfDs), which aim to provide stable and predictable revenue streams over the long term.

The Apollo program is designed as a nationwide initiative focused on increasing access to affordable renewable electricity. It places particular emphasis on supporting vulnerable consumers, municipalities, and public utilities in reaping the benefits of lower-cost green power, thereby fostering a more inclusive energy transition across Greece.
