German RWE interested in building hydroelectric power plants on the Velika Morava river

Serbian Minister of Economy and Regional Development Mladjan Dinkic stated yesterday (August 24, 2010) in Berlin, after the meeting of the Business Council of Germany and Serbia, that German energy company RWE had expressed interest in building a hydroelectric power plant on the Velika Morava river and announced the possibility of procurement of Airbus airplanes for Jat Airways. He added that German companies were interested in modernizing Serbian railways.

Assessing that the meeting of the Business Council was successful, Dinkic said that it had been the occasion for talks about strategic projects, with the focus on cooperation in the energy sector.

He said that German RWE energy company had announced the possibility of drafting a feasibility study on the construction of a hydroelectric power plant on the Velika Morava river by the end of the year, while the representatives of German companies had expressed interest in construction of infrastructure in Serbia.

– Great interest was expressed in rail infrastructure projects, particularly the improvement of the Koeln-Istanbul rail line in order to shorten the travel from current 35 hours to 25 – Dinkic announced and added that the modernization of the rail line from Pancevo to the Romanian border had also been discussed atht meeting of the Business Council.

Serbian Minister stated that they had also talked about the possibility of procurement of Airbus airplanes for Jat Airways and added that the end of negotiations was expected in the months to come, so that Jat’s fleet might be soon enriched with the airplanes made in Hamburg.

The Business Council of Germany and Serbia was formed in 2003 at the initiative of Gerhard Schroeder who was German Councilor at the time. The yesterday’s meeting was the first in last four years.
