GEN-I Invest is extending its role in Southeast Europe’s battery storage market through the acquisition of three projects in Bulgaria. The new assets are located in Belovo, Momchilgrad, and Parvomay. Together, the projects provide a combined capacity of 30 MW and 76 MWh. The transaction marks the company’s first direct energy storage investments outside Slovenia.
Following the deal, GEN-I Invest increases its owned storage portfolio to 42 MW and 100 MWh. The total includes an existing battery facility rated at 12 MW / 24 MWh near Talum in Slovenia. The company’s expansion moves from involvement focused on storage optimization services toward direct ownership of flexibility infrastructure.
Battery system optimization and operational management role
In addition to owning storage assets, the company is involved in battery system optimization and operational management. Many of the storage facilities it manages remain third-party owned. GEN-I is positioning itself as both an operator and an investor in storage capacity across multiple markets.
Bulgaria and Romania targets for managed storage capacity
GEN-I Invest expects the total battery storage capacity it manages in Bulgaria and Romania to reach around 800 MW this year. The company links the growth to increasing demand for flexibility services across SEE power systems. This target reflects a scaling of managed capacity beyond the initial Bulgarian acquisitions.
Planned additional acquisitions by year-end
The company has also indicated plans to further expand its investment footprint. GEN-I is targeting the acquisition of additional projects totaling approximately 100 MW of new storage capacity by the end of the year. The stated plan places further emphasis on expanding storage capacity within the region’s electricity markets.
