According to a WindEurope report, Europe’s wind energy capacity increased by 16.4 GW last year, reaching a total of 285 GW. Onshore wind farms accounted for 84% of the newly installed capacity in 2023.
Germany led the growth with an additional 4 GW, followed by the UK (1.9 GW), France (1.7 GW), Finland (1.4 GW), Turkey (1.3 GW), Spain (1.2 GW), and Sweden (1 GW). Across the 27 EU member states, total wind capacity expansion amounted to 12.9 GW.
Wind power played a significant role in Denmark and Ireland’s electricity generation, making up 56% of Denmark’s total electricity capacity and 33% of Ireland’s.
Looking ahead, Europe’s wind energy capacity is expected to grow by 186 GW between 2025 and 2030, with the EU contributing 139 GW to this expansion.
