Grid connection approvals for 17 battery storage projects
Romanian utility Electrica has obtained technical network connection approvals for 17 battery energy storage projects, supporting the development of a broader storage pipeline totaling around 700 MWh. The approvals set out the technical conditions needed to connect the planned facilities to the national electricity grid. With this step completed, the projects can move into detailed design, then proceed through permitting and eventual construction. Electrica expects the battery systems to be operational by the end of 2027.
Role in Electrica’s 2030 generation and storage targets
The battery projects are part of Electrica’s wider investment strategy targeting 1 GW of generation capacity and at least 900 MWh of energy storage by 2030. CEO Alexandru Chiriță said expanding battery capacity is intended to improve grid flexibility, support renewable integration, and optimize use of existing network infrastructure. The company’s approach links the storage build-out with its broader generation development plans.
EU Modernisation Fund support and funded assets
Electrica’s latest approvals were reported alongside recent funding milestones. Earlier this month, the company secured approximately €935,000 from the EU Modernisation Fund for a battery storage project at the Vulturu solar power plant in eastern Romania. The Vulturu initiative is among a series of projects backed through European financing channels.
Solar and battery projects supported under European funding
Electrica has already benefited from financing for the 27 MW Satu Mare 2 solar power plant, which has been completed. Additional support has been approved for the 69.93 MWh Fântânele battery storage facility, scheduled to enter operation later this year. Together, these developments track a growing set of funded renewable and storage assets in Romania.
