Romania’s nuclear energy sector is poised for significant advancement as Concelex has secured a contract valued at approximately 50 million euros from Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) for the refurbishment of Unit 1 at the Cernavodă nuclear plant. This development marks a crucial step in the country’s strategy to modernize its nuclear infrastructure, enhancing safety and operational efficiency.
Scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2026, the refurbishment project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The initiative is integral to Romania’s long-term nuclear strategy, which focuses on extending the operational lifespan of its reactors while adhering to stringent safety regulations.
The scope of work under this contract includes the construction of various operational and administrative facilities. These will encompass technical buildings, logistics and storage areas, an electrical transformer substation, controlled-access facilities, internal roadways, and platforms designed for heavy equipment and material handling.
Additionally, the project will implement vital fire protection measures, including water reservoirs and pumping stations. It will also involve the relocation of utility pipelines and cable routes, installation of groundwater monitoring systems, and the creation of internal circulation zones to facilitate safe movement for personnel and machinery.
Beyond structural enhancements, Concelex will establish comprehensive utility networks and deploy security and surveillance systems specifically designed for nuclear operations. This approach aims to ensure that refurbishment activities proceed without interruption while meeting rigorous safety standards. Concelex’s previous experience with Cernavodă’s dry spent fuel storage—comprising one completed project and another currently in progress—reinforces its position as a key domestic contractor within Romania’s strategic nuclear framework.
