The Independent Bulgarian Energy Exchange (IBEX) is commemorating the tenth anniversary of its day-ahead market, a significant milestone in Bulgaria’s electricity trading landscape. Since its inception, this market segment has established a framework for transparent and publicly traceable electricity transactions, which has become essential to the country’s energy sector.

During the anniversary event, IBEX CEO Dian Boev noted that the day-ahead market has evolved into a vital platform for generating reliable price signals and ensuring market liquidity. Over the past decade, IBEX has continually refined its operational rules, product offerings, and trading infrastructure to align with the dynamic needs of its participants.

The growth trajectory of the day-ahead market is evident in both participant engagement and trading volumes. Active participants have surged to 150, a substantial increase from just 21 in January 2016. Concurrently, traded volumes have skyrocketed from 4,369.2 MWh on January 20, 2016, to an anticipated 104,294.85 MWh by January 20, 2026, marking an impressive 24-fold increase.

From 2016 to 2025, the cumulative traded volume on the day-ahead market is projected to reach approximately 175.6 TWh. This figure represents around two-thirds of all power exchange trading conducted on IBEX during this period. Such performance underscores the pivotal role that the day-ahead segment plays in Bulgaria’s electricity market and highlights the collaborative efforts of market participants alongside IBEX’s dedication to fostering transparent and competitive trading environments.
