In 2025, Bulgaria’s electricity production experienced a notable increase of 5.62% year-on-year, totaling 40.11 TWh, as reported by the country’s electricity transmission system operator, ESO. This growth reflects a significant recovery in the generation sector, underscoring the resilience of Bulgaria’s energy market.
Electricity consumption also rose during this period, climbing by 4.88% to reach 38.76 TWh. This surge in demand allowed Bulgaria to maintain its status as a net exporter of electricity, with net exports amounting to 1.36 TWh for the year.
The role of baseload power plants remains crucial in Bulgaria’s energy landscape. Coal- and nuclear-fired facilities generated a total of 28.96 TWh, marking a 1.76% increase compared to the previous year. This data confirms the ongoing significance of conventional energy sources in the national power mix.
Meanwhile, renewable energy sources (RES) have seen substantial growth. Electricity generated from RES connected to the transmission network surged by 19.6%, reaching 3,980.7 GWh. Additionally, generation from RES within the distribution network increased by 19.71%, totaling 3,944.7 GWh. This trend highlights the rapid development of decentralized renewable capacity across Bulgaria.
The combination of increased production from both traditional and renewable sources positions Bulgaria favorably within the regional energy market, reflecting broader trends towards sustainability while ensuring energy security through diverse generation methods.
