Belgrade has commissioned a new 110/35 kV Beograd 44 substation in Surčin, strengthening the city’s electricity distribution network. The infrastructure is intended to support rising electricity demand associated with the EXPO 2027 development and surrounding urban expansion.
Construction timeline and investment
The facility was completed in one year of construction. The project involves an investment of around €23 million and was delivered by Elnos.
The commissioning forms part of broader efforts to expand and modernize Belgrade’s power infrastructure ahead of several major upcoming developments. It is positioned as an element of the electricity supply arrangements for the future EXPO 2027 complex.
Role in EXPO 2027 and related grid upgrades
The new substation is expected to become one of the key electricity supply points for the future EXPO 2027 site. It is also designed to support planned energy infrastructure connected to the project, including the upcoming Beograd 58 – National Stadium substation.
In addition to that linked facility, the Surčin works are associated with other distribution upgrades planned alongside the EXPO 2027-related buildout.
Equipment, automation and footprint reduction
The Beograd 44 installation is equipped with two transformers rated at 31.5 MVA each. With that configuration, it more than doubles available distribution capacity in this part of Belgrade.
The substation incorporates Siemens technology and operates as a fully automated facility with remote control capabilities from a central dispatch center. According to distribution system operator EDS, advanced technical solutions have reduced the physical footprint of the installation compared with a conventional substation of comparable capacity.
