The Albanian Power Exchange (ALPEX) has announced a notable increase in its day-ahead electricity trading, with total volumes reaching 168.6 GWh in December 2025. This figure reflects a 70.8% increase year-on-year, although it represents a slight decline of 1% compared to the previous month. The surge in trading activity underscores the growing integration and dynamism of the regional electricity market.
Breaking down the traded volumes, 110.2 GWh was allocated to the Kosovo bidding zone, while 99.4 GWh was designated for the Albanian bidding zone. The average market clearing prices were reported at 123.23 euros/MWh for Albania and 124.35 euros/MWh for Kosovo, indicating a competitive pricing environment that may influence future trading strategies.
The total transaction value on ALPEX for December reached approximately 41.8 million euros, marking a significant rise of 39.8% compared to December 2024. This increase in transaction value highlights the strengthening demand for electricity within both Albania and Kosovo, as well as the effectiveness of ALPEX in facilitating market operations.
ALPEX was established in October 2020 through a collaboration between the Albanian transmission system operator (OST) and its Kosovo counterpart (KOSTT). Following its inaugural auction in April 2023, ALPEX has grown to include 36 active members, reflecting its role as a critical player in enhancing market liquidity and operational efficiency across the two bidding zones.
The developments at ALPEX indicate a robust trajectory for power trading in Southeast Europe, with implications for market participants seeking to navigate an evolving landscape characterized by increased cross-border exchanges and regulatory alignments.
