In a significant move to bolster its renewable energy portfolio, French company Voltalia has reported that its 140 MW Karavasta solar power plant, located in southwestern Albania, generated 260 GWh of electricity in 2025. This output represents a modest increase of approximately 0.7% from the previous year, following the plant’s commencement of operations in December 2023.
A substantial portion of the annual electricity production from the Karavasta facility is directed to the Albanian electricity distribution system operator, OSHEE, under a long-term 15-year power purchase agreement. The remaining output is sold to various private operators, ensuring consistent revenue for the project and contributing to Albania’s growing renewable energy landscape.
In addition to the Karavasta project, Voltalia has secured a 30-year electricity generation license from the Albanian energy regulator, ERE, for its new venture, Spitalla Solar. This project involves the development of a 90 MW solar power plant near the coastal city of Durres, marking Voltalia’s second major investment in Albania’s solar sector and reinforcing its strategic position in the region.
The construction phase for the Spitalla site commenced in late 2025, with expectations for operational status in the latter half of 2027. This expansion not only underscores Voltalia’s commitment to renewable energy but also aligns with Albania’s broader goals of increasing its renewable energy capacity and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
