In a strategic move to bolster its energy security, Ukraine has raised its electricity import capacity from the European Union to 2,450 MW for January, up from the previous limit of 2,150 MW. This adjustment is crucial as it provides a greater buffer for managing system stress during the winter months, when electricity demand typically peaks and domestic generation faces increased challenges.
The increase in import capacity was achieved through collaboration among transmission system operators within the Eastern Europe Capacity Calculation Region, alongside ENTSO-E and TSCnet, the regional coordination center. This revised limit applies specifically to the shared regulatory area of Ukraine and Moldova, enhancing technical availability and offering Ukraine additional options to stabilize its electrical grid amid cold weather and high consumption periods.
While the new ceiling allows for increased imports, actual electricity volumes will still be influenced by market dynamics, particularly price differentials between Ukraine and neighboring EU countries. Monthly assessments of cross-border capacity aim to enhance predictability in power flows, building on recent coordinated auctions conducted with Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania.
According to Ukrenergo, this expanded import limit significantly strengthens the resilience of Ukraine’s power system at a time when infrastructure remains vulnerable due to ongoing attacks. Although technical capacity alone does not guarantee higher import levels, the increase creates a more favorable environment for maintaining system balance during critical periods.
Ukrenergo has reported that daily electricity imports have already surpassed last year’s peak levels, underscoring the practical significance of this newly available capacity as the country navigates through the current winter season.
