In a significant development for Slovenia’s energy sector, the electricity market operator Borzen has finalized a series of public auctions as part of the country’s transitional financing framework aimed at phasing out coal. These auctions were executed in collaboration with the energy exchange BSP, utilizing its long-term trading platform, and are aligned with legislation designed to facilitate an accelerated and equitable transition away from coal dependency.

The primary auction involved a total of 260 GWh of baseload electricity slated for generation by TPP Sostanj during the first quarter of 2027. This volume was divided into six distinct lots, attracting competitive bids from four entities, comprising two domestic firms and two international companies. Ultimately, all six lots were awarded to GEN-I, which secured the electricity at prices ranging from 110 to 111 euros per megawatt-hour (MWh).

In conjunction with the electricity auction, Borzen also held a separate auction focused on emission allowances necessary for the operational compliance of TPP Sostanj. The emission allowances were procured from various market participants, with GEN-I and international trading house Trafigura each providing two lots. Additional single lots were obtained from HSE and CFP Commodities Limited, with the price for carbon emissions fluctuating between 82 and 83.5 euros per ton.

These coordinated auctions play a crucial role in ensuring both electricity supply and carbon compliance for TPP Sostanj as it navigates the evolving landscape of Slovenia’s coal transition framework. By securing these resources, Borzen aims to support the operational viability of TPP Sostanj while adhering to national and EU environmental standards.
