In order to promote the use of renewable sources and the improvement of air quality, Serbian Ministry of Mining and Energy and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The goal of the Memorandum is to provide a framework for cooperation in improving the air quality, promoting the use of renewable energy sources for production and distribution of heating energy in Serbia and increasing the energy efficiency.

Energy Minister Zorana Mihajlovic said that the Ministry had defined several strategic pillars – the legal framework, a new investment plan in energy and a reform of operations of public companies. It has prepared four laws as the foundation for the establishment of an improved business environment and new investments in energy and mining. There’s plenty of room for the continuation of the successful cooperation with EBRD, especially when it comes to the construction of medium and large hydropower plants and renewable energy sources – solar, wind and biomass. EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso said that the bank believes in energy transition and green energy and is pleased with everything Serbia has done so far in this field, and is looking forward to the further cooperation. Renewable energy sources and clean energy are our key strategic goals. You’ve made a huge progress in a short amount of time. She said that the new laws will lead directly to new investments and the EBRD will support these investments.
