Serbia is actively enhancing its energy collaboration with France, particularly in the realm of nuclear power, as part of its broader strategy for a sustainable energy transition. Recent discussions involved key figures such as Dubravka Đedovic, Serbia’s Minister of Mining and Energy, and Anne Roos-Weil, the deputy director for Europe at the French Development Agency (AFD). The focus of these talks was to expand the partnership with AFD, which includes providing technical assistance to facilitate Serbia’s energy transition and support for the initial stages of nuclear energy implementation.
The dialogue underscored the importance of capacity building and necessary analytical groundwork ahead of any significant investments in nuclear technology. Serbian officials noted that their relationship with France has strengthened considerably over recent years. This deepening partnership was highlighted during Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Belgrade, where both nations formalized agreements related to nuclear energy cooperation and the management of critical mineral resources.
With rising electricity demand and pressing decarbonization targets, Serbia is increasingly considering nuclear power as a stable baseload energy source. The Serbian government has formally sought AFD’s expertise for the preliminary phase of its nuclear initiative, which encompasses training qualified personnel, evaluating potential impacts on the national transmission network, and contributing to comprehensive long-term energy planning aligned with Serbia’s climate objectives through 2050.
Additionally, Serbia has entered into a cooperation agreement with French utility EDF, which has already conducted a preliminary technical study regarding the peaceful use of nuclear energy within the country. The expertise provided by France is deemed crucial as Serbia assesses its nuclear capabilities. Ongoing discussions have also focused on EDF’s role in supporting early program stages, which include initiatives for workforce training and public outreach efforts. Both parties have committed to advancing a focused study on AFD’s involvement in nuclear development while simultaneously exploring opportunities for energy efficiency projects.
