Retele Electrice Romania, a subsidiary of the PPC Group, has commenced a significant procurement initiative aimed at enhancing the country’s electricity distribution framework. This tender is part of a strategic investment plan that spans from 2026 to 2030, focusing on the acquisition of compact, factory-assembled secondary substations.
The contract is estimated to be worth around €12 million (excluding VAT) and centers on the provision of prefabricated concrete transformer stations that incorporate 24 kV medium-voltage systems. These innovative “MINIBOX” units are engineered to facilitate rapid deployment, minimize construction time on-site, and enhance operational safety once integrated into the grid.
Upon installation, these substations will be incorporated into an advanced remote monitoring and control system, which is expected to bolster grid management efficiency. This effort aligns with a wider modernization agenda aimed at boosting network capacity, enhancing reliability, and allowing for the seamless integration of new energy sources, particularly decentralized generation.
The compact and standardized design of the substations is anticipated to maximize space utilization at distribution locations, while also improving resilience against potential climate-related challenges. The bidding process for this procurement will remain open until May 25, with the chosen contractor tasked with fulfilling delivery obligations over a four-year period.
