Renalfa IPP, a prominent player in the renewable energy sector, is advancing its efforts in North Macedonia by integrating a substantial battery energy storage system (BESS) into its Oslomej solar power project. This initiative underscores the region’s commitment to enhancing its clean energy infrastructure.

The newly announced installation of a 50 MW / 200 MWh battery storage facility will complement the existing 65.8 MW solar power plant, operational since 2023. This expansion aims to bolster grid stability and improve operational flexibility, allowing for better management of the variable output associated with solar energy generation.

Located on the site of a former lignite mine, the Oslomej energy complex is a collaborative effort with the state-owned utility, ESM (Elektrani na Severna Makedonija). This project aligns with North Macedonia’s broader strategy to repurpose coal-based energy sites into renewable energy hubs, contributing significantly to the nation’s long-term decarbonization objectives.

The Oslomej project has garnered recognition from both regional and international bodies as a key investment in green energy within the Western Balkans. Its inclusion as a flagship project under the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) in 2024 highlights its pivotal role in facilitating regional energy transition.

Financial support for this venture has been secured through Finance in Motion, via the Green for Growth Fund, which is instrumental in aiding North Macedonia’s transition from fossil fuels toward more sustainable electricity generation practices.

Renalfa IPP, formed through a partnership between the Renalfa Solarpro Group and French investment firm RGreen Invest, won the project through a state tender process conducted in 2021, which encompassed the development of two additional 50 MW solar power plants.
