North Macedonia has successfully modernized a critical electricity transmission link, the 110 kV Bitola–Prilep line, which has recently entered trial operation. This project represents a significant advancement for the country’s energy infrastructure, following extensive reconstruction efforts completed at the end of 2025.
The upgraded line connects the Bitola 1 and Prilep 1 substations and was constructed along its existing route. The project involved dismantling old reinforced concrete towers that had been in place for over fifty years and replacing them with a new structure supported by 125 steel lattice pylons. This change enhances both the reliability and structural integrity of the transmission system.
Spanning 33.5 kilometers, the new line features a comprehensive renewal of its electrical components, including new phase conductors, ground wires, insulators, and auxiliary equipment. These upgrades significantly improve the electrical performance and mechanical resilience of the transmission corridor.
The modernization is expected to enhance the safety, stability, and operational flexibility of North Macedonia’s national grid, according to the transmission system operator MEPSO. The increased capacity is particularly crucial as it supports anticipated future growth in electricity demand across the region.
This project forms part of Lot 1 of MEPSO’s larger grid investment initiative and was financed through a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The construction and engineering works were executed between 2023 and 2025 by a consortium led by Croatian firm Dalekovod, which adhered to all contractual and technical standards throughout the process.
The energization of this line marks a pivotal moment in MEPSO’s ongoing strategy to systematically upgrade and strengthen North Macedonia’s transmission infrastructure. This initiative aims to bolster electricity supply security while increasing the overall capacity and robustness of the national power system.
