Motor Oil Renewable Energy (MORE) has commissioned the Stalpu 2 hybrid power plant in Romania. The project is described as MORE’s first renewable-energy investment outside Greece and its first initiative combining solar generation with battery storage technology.
Stalpu 2 configuration and grid operation role
The facility pairs a 63 MW solar photovoltaic plant with a battery energy storage system. The BESS has 10 MW of power capacity and 21 MWh of storage capacity. MORE says the hybrid setup enables the project to retain part of its electricity output and dispatch it during periods of higher demand. The company links this to improved grid flexibility, operational efficiency, and system stability.
Expected generation and emissions impact
MORE expects Stalpu 2 to produce approximately 76 GWh of electricity annually. The company estimates this output would be sufficient to supply around 32,000 households. MORE also estimates that the renewable facility will reduce more than 26,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year. The figures are presented in support of Romania’s decarbonisation objectives and the wider energy transition in Southeast Europe.
International expansion and hybrid asset focus
The commissioning is positioned as a milestone for MORE’s international expansion strategy. It marks the company’s entry into the Romanian renewable-energy market and its first step beyond Greece. The project is also cited as an example of hybrid renewable assets combining solar generation with storage to address intermittency challenges. MORE says such assets can create additional value in increasingly flexible electricity markets.
With renewable capacity expanding across the region, projects like Stalpu 2 are presented as part of a shift in investment priorities. MORE’s description emphasizes not only clean electricity production but also improved market integration, grid resilience, and long-term energy security.
