HUPX Day-Ahead Electricity Prices Experience Significant Rise in January 2026

In January 2026, the Hungarian energy exchange, HUPX, reported a notable surge in day-ahead electricity prices. The average price on the day-ahead market reached 150.41 euros/MWh, representing a substantial 29.8% increase from December 2025, when prices averaged 115.88 euros/MWh. Additionally, the average peak price for this period was recorded at 176.37 euros/MWh, marking a significant rise of 36.4% compared to the previous month.

The trading activity on the day-ahead market reflected this price escalation, with a total traded volume of 3.41 million MWh in January. This figure indicates a rise of 12.1% from December 2025’s volume of 3.04 million MWh and is also 29.2% higher than January 2025’s total of 2.64 million MWh. Furthermore, on the intraday continuous market, the total traded volume reached 1,098,895 MWh, which is an increase of 5.8% compared to the previous month.

<pMarket participation remained robust during this period, with 113 members registered on the day-ahead market and 105 members engaged in the intraday continuous market. This level of engagement underscores a stable interest among market participants amidst fluctuating price dynamics.
