In a strategic move to bolster energy security and market integration, Hungary is looking to deepen its energy collaboration with Serbia and Slovakia following the anticipated acquisition of the Serbian oil company NIS by MOL Group. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto emphasized that this transaction is expected to facilitate a more cohesive operational framework among the oil markets of these three landlocked nations.

Szijjarto highlighted that the completion of this acquisition would not only enhance coordination but also fortify their collective resilience against external political pressures that could disrupt energy supply routes. The integration of these markets is seen as a crucial step towards ensuring stable energy supplies in the region.

In addition to the acquisition, Hungary and Serbia have initiated plans to expedite preparatory work for a new cross-border oil pipeline. This infrastructure project aims to diversify supply routes and strengthen energy security, particularly in response to recent disruptions in the energy sector. The Minister pointed out that this pipeline will play a vital role in enhancing stability for both Hungary and Serbia while contributing to broader energy integration across Central Europe.

Furthermore, Minister Szijjarto reaffirmed the Hungarian government’s commitment to supporting MOL in its regional expansion strategy, indicating a strong governmental backing for initiatives that promote energy cooperation. His statements came after discussions with Serbian Energy Minister Dubravka Đedovic during an international conference in Washington focused on enhancing energy cooperation between the United States and Eastern European nations.

This collaborative approach reflects a growing recognition among Hungary, Serbia, and Slovakia of the need for integrated energy strategies that can withstand geopolitical uncertainties and ensure reliable access to energy resources.
