Hungary commissions largest battery storage near Buj for grid flexibility

Supported byClarion Energy

Hungary has commissioned its largest battery energy storage facility near the town of Buj in the northeastern part of the country. The project is positioned as part of efforts to modernize the power grid while supporting a higher share of renewable electricity generation.

Project scale and EU support

The installation comprises two battery storage units with a combined capacity of 99.8 MW. Development received more than €31 million in non-repayable European Union funding, described as one of the most significant energy storage investments in Hungary to date.

Grid services and market expectations

Government officials said the facility is intended to improve electricity system flexibility by balancing fluctuations between supply and demand. They also expect it to enhance market competition, reduce system balancing costs, and support more stable electricity prices over the long term.

Developer, ownership and operating entities

The Buj battery project was developed by Greenvolt Power, a subsidiary of the Greenvolt Group. Company representatives said it is their second investment in Hungary and that another project in the country is already being prepared.

Greenvolt operates exclusively in the renewable energy sector and is active across Europe, Asia, and North America as part of the investment portfolio of US-based KKR. The battery assets are operated through the project companies Buj Energy Storage and Buj Battery.

Technical configuration

Each of the two installed battery systems has a rated power of 49.9 MW. The energy storage capacity for each system totals 144.3 MWh.
