The Greek electricity market has experienced a significant transformation, culminating in a reported export revenue of €972 million for the year 2025. According to data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority, this shift has allowed Greece to close the year with a trade surplus of €261 million in its electricity sector, marking a pivotal change in the country’s energy landscape.
This recent achievement stands in stark contrast to 2019, when Greece faced a trade deficit of approximately €400 million due to its reliance on imported electricity. The improvement over the past six years reflects a financial turnaround of around €650 million, illustrating the effectiveness of policy changes and investments in domestic energy production.
The momentum for this positive trend began in 2024, when Greece first became a net exporter of electricity since 2000, ending that year with a surplus of €121.5 million. This marked a significant structural shift in the nation’s energy dynamics. The upward trajectory continued into 2025, with analysis from energy think tank Green Tank indicating that net electricity exports exceeded 3 terawatt-hours (TWh), nearly tenfold compared to the previous year’s figures. Notably, Greece exported more electricity than it imported for 11 out of the 12 months in 2025, compared to just five months in 2024.
Government officials are interpreting these developments as indicators of enhanced competitiveness within the energy sector. Deputy Energy Minister Nikos Tsafos highlighted that Greece has ascended to seventh place among the European Union’s energy exporters, a remarkable shift from its previous position as one of the largest net importers within the bloc.
