Greece’s Electricity Network Set for Major Upgrade with 600 MW Capacity Increase

The modernization of Greece’s electricity distribution network is advancing as part of a significant upgrade program that aims to add approximately 600 MW of new capacity. This initiative primarily focuses on enhancing the medium- and high-voltage substations managed by the distribution system operator, DEDDIE. The project is designed to address increasing demand and improve the efficiency of the electricity grid.

Financed through the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Fund (RRF), this upgrade is linked to Greece’s ninth disbursement milestone and is expected to be completed by late summer, specifically between August and September. The scope of the project includes replacing outdated transformers with larger capacity units and installing new transformers in areas where existing infrastructure cannot accommodate rising energy needs.

A total of 14 substations have been selected for upgrades based on a collaborative planning effort between DEDDIE and the transmission system operator, ADMIE. The selection process considered both technical specifications and market dynamics, particularly focusing on regions with high interest in new renewable energy connections.

While the overall program adheres to a unified RRF timetable, each substation upgrade follows its own detailed execution plan. Implementation has been progressing smoothly, with no identified risks threatening timely completion. In several instances, progress has outpaced initial expectations, leading to the possibility that some substations could be operational ahead of schedule. This would further alleviate network congestion and facilitate quicker connections for new energy sources.
