In a significant development for renewable energy in Southeast Europe, EVN North Macedonia has officially launched the largest licensed battery energy storage system in the country. This 10 MW facility, located adjacent to the company’s solar power plant in Probištip, represents a critical advancement in the region’s efforts to integrate renewable energy sources into the power grid.

The newly commissioned system boasts a storage capacity of 20 MWh, with plans already in place to expand this capacity to 40 MWh in a future phase. This expansion underscores the growing demand for robust energy storage solutions as North Macedonia transitions towards a more sustainable energy landscape.

Utilizing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology, the storage system combines battery units from CATL with an energy conversion system designed by K Star. The integration of this battery system with the Probištip solar plant is expected to enhance the flexibility and stability of renewable electricity production, thereby improving overall efficiency in energy management.

This initiative is part of a broader trend across the region, where utilities are increasingly investing in battery energy storage systems (BESS) to address challenges posed by intermittent renewable generation. As countries strive to stabilize their power systems amid rising renewable penetration, such projects are becoming essential components of energy strategy and policy.
