The Croatian government has approved a substantial budget reallocation aimed at addressing the financial challenges faced by the country’s gas market. A total of €213 million will be redirected to assist energy suppliers in managing the disparities between regulated and market gas prices. This decision comes as part of an effort to stabilize the sector amid ongoing economic pressures.
The funds are specifically earmarked to bridge the financial gaps experienced by key suppliers, including Gradska Plinara Zagreb-Opskrba and E.ON Plin. These compensations will cover the period from the second quarter of 2023 through the third quarter of 2024, during which regulated prices did not adequately reflect prevailing market conditions, as determined by the Croatian Energy Regulatory Agency (HERA).
This financial initiative is being executed under the provisions of the 2026 State Budget Execution Law, which permits the government to reallocate resources throughout the fiscal year without adhering to typical budgetary constraints. This flexibility is crucial for responding to the economic ramifications of the broader European security crisis that has been exacerbated by the conflict in Ukraine.
In addition to addressing past discrepancies, part of the allocated funds will also be used for new obligations stemming from ongoing market volatility. Recent assessments indicate a rising demand for financial assistance not only for energy companies but also for various off-budget entities, reflecting a comprehensive approach to managing current challenges.
