A significant solar power initiative in northern Bulgaria, known as the Wabi-Sabi project, has progressed to the implementation phase following the approval of its environmental assessment by regional authorities. This decision by the Ministry of Environment and Water allows for immediate execution of the project, which has drawn considerable opposition from local community groups concerned about environmental impacts.
The Ministry’s authorization underscores the project’s strategic importance for both the local municipality and the broader region. Officials have emphasized that this project is crucial for Bulgaria to meet its ambitious goal of achieving a 34.1% share of renewable energy in final consumption by 2030.
Wabi-Sabi, developed by Wabi-Sabi Alpha with financial backing from Vienna-based Green Source, is set to become one of Bulgaria’s largest solar installations with a projected capacity of 500 MW. The overall investment in the project is anticipated to reach 450 million euros, with around 30 million euros already allocated for preparatory activities. The site, located near Suhindol, covers nearly 1,000 hectares, positioning it among the most extensive renewable energy projects in the country.
Despite receiving regulatory support, local opposition remains robust. Critics argue that permitting early execution allows construction to commence while legal challenges are still pending. Ongoing judicial reviews concerning the environmental decision have raised alarms among opponents, particularly regarding plans to clear approximately 100 hectares of forested land. These groups warn that irreversible environmental damage could occur if construction proceeds before court rulings on the legality of the approvals are finalized, highlighting tensions between rapid renewable energy development and environmental stewardship.
