Unit 6 at Bulgaria’s nuclear power plant Kozloduy has been temporarily taken offline to facilitate the replacement of a damaged safety component in its turbine system. The specific component being addressed is a rupture membrane assembly located within the moisture separator reheater, which operates outside the nuclear section of the facility. This maintenance is part of ongoing efforts to ensure operational reliability and safety.
The plant operator has emphasized that the issue is confined to the turbine island, with no reported environmental impact or pollutant release resulting from this shutdown. A new rupture membrane and pin have been manufactured using materials that comply with original technical specifications. Following the completion of these maintenance activities, Unit 6 is anticipated to be reconnected to the national power grid, restoring its contribution to Bulgaria’s energy supply.
Meanwhile, Unit 5 at the same facility continues to operate normally and is achieving its production targets without interruption. This incident marks another instance of maintenance on Unit 6, which had previously been taken offline due to a similar defect in its turbine’s rupture disk assembly late last year. Such recurring maintenance highlights the importance of regular inspections and timely interventions in ensuring the efficiency and safety of nuclear operations in Bulgaria.
