In December 2025, the Bulgarian Independent Bulgarian Energy Exchange (IBEX) reported significant activity on its day-ahead market, with a total of 2,611,971.3 MWh of electricity traded. This figure marks a 9.4% increase from November’s trading volume. However, despite the monthly growth, the total traded volume remains 3% lower year-on-year, indicating a mixed performance in the market.

The average baseload price for December was recorded at €117.25/MWh, reflecting a decrease of 3.5% from the previous month. Similarly, the average peak price fell by 4.6%, settling at €130.83/MWh. These price reductions could signal a softening market environment as supply dynamics shift.

The number of participants engaging in day-ahead trading also saw an uptick, reaching 147, which is an increase of two compared to November. This growth in participation could enhance liquidity and competition within the market.

<pOn the intraday continuous market, trading volumes increased significantly, totaling 617,690.3 MWh, which represents a month-on-month rise of 12.4%. The average weighted price for intraday transactions slightly decreased to €124.58/MWh, down by 0.7%. This month marked the highest recorded intraday trading volume to date, surpassing October’s record by approximately 5%.

The ongoing growth in short-term power trading on IBEX highlights evolving market dynamics and increasing engagement from traders and utilities alike. These trends may have implications for future pricing strategies and operational planning within Bulgaria’s energy sector.
