Bulgaria’s IBEX Sees Decline in Day-Ahead Trading, Record Intraday Volumes in April

In April 2026, the Independent Bulgarian Energy Exchange (IBEX) reported a total of 2,585,059.9 MWh traded in the day-ahead market, marking an 8% decline from March. The average daily trading volume for the month was 86,168.7 MWh, yet this figure represents an 11.7% increase year-on-year, indicating a robust annual growth trend despite the monthly downturn.

The average baseload price on the day-ahead market was recorded at €90.99/MWh, reflecting a significant 12% drop from March’s average of €103.54/MWh. Additionally, peak prices saw a steep decline, falling to €57.5/MWh, which constitutes a remarkable 31% reduction month-over-month.

Market participation remained stable with 153 registered participants active in the day-ahead market, unchanged from the previous month. This stability suggests consistent engagement among market players amidst fluctuating prices.

<pConversely, the intraday continuous market experienced notable growth, with 826,338.4 MWh traded—an increase of 10% month-on-month. The average weighted price for intraday transactions was reported at €65.7/MWh, down by 25.5% compared to March. This surge in intraday trading volume underscores the increasing significance of short-term trading strategies and effective volatility management within Bulgaria’s energy landscape.
