A significant advancement in Bulgaria’s renewable energy landscape has been marked by the expansion of the Maglizh solar power facility, which has integrated a large-scale battery storage system. This development is the result of a collaboration between Eurohold Bulgaria and 360 Energy, aiming to enhance hybrid renewable energy generation capabilities.
The newly installed battery energy storage system, provided by ESCO Bulgaria, contributes an additional 36 MW of power capacity and 72 MWh of storage capability. This upgrade allows the Maglizh solar project to synergize photovoltaic electricity generation with advanced energy storage technology, thereby increasing operational flexibility and improving its integration with the national electricity grid.
Situated near the village of Dabovo in the Stara Zagora region, the Maglizh complex already boasts a solar plant with an installed capacity of 161 MW. The project is co-owned by 360 Energy and Solaris Energy, which is linked to the principal shareholders of Eurohold Bulgaria. The solar facility commenced commercial operations in September 2025 and is connected to Bulgaria’s national transmission network managed by ESO.
Developers anticipate that the facility will generate sufficient electricity annually to power over 65,000 households. Additionally, it is projected that this renewable energy complex will lead to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 200,000 tons per year, aligning with Bulgaria’s climate objectives and clean energy goals.
Funding for this ambitious project was secured through a consortium of banks, including UBB, Ascory Bank, Raiffeisen International Bank, Bulgarian Postbank, and UniCredit Bulbank. Furthermore, additional financial support was obtained through Bulgaria’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, underscoring the project’s significance within national energy policy frameworks.
The integration of large-scale battery technology at the Maglizh facility exemplifies a broader trend across Europe where renewable energy developers are increasingly combining solar and wind generation with storage solutions. This strategic move aims to enhance energy balancing, boost grid stability, and fortify the reliability of electricity networks throughout the region.
