Bulgaria’s state-owned gas supplier, Bulgargaz, has launched a procurement initiative aimed at bolstering its liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies in anticipation of heightened summer demand. This strategic move is part of a broader effort to ensure both immediate and future gas supply security for the country.
The tender involves the acquisition of a single LNG cargo with a capacity of 1,000,000 MWh, which is set to be delivered to a terminal located in Turkey. To maintain quality and reliability, participation in this tender has been limited to a select group of 37 pre-approved international traders and producers. The evaluation of bids will focus on multiple critical factors, such as price competitiveness, delivery terms, and payment conditions.
This procurement strategy is not only aimed at meeting short-term supply needs but also addresses medium-term storage capabilities. Following the anticipated completion of maintenance activities at the Alexandroupoli LNG terminal in Greece, Bulgargaz plans to secure an additional LNG shipment. This cargo is expected to be directed toward the Chiren gas storage facility, thereby enhancing reserve levels ahead of the upcoming 2026–2027 winter season. Notably, the Alexandroupoli terminal has been offline since early April due to scheduled maintenance.
Bulgargaz’s approach reflects a dual strategy that emphasizes both immediate procurement and seasonal storage optimization. This strategy is designed to strengthen supply reliability while addressing the challenges posed by fluctuating regional gas market dynamics.
