The Republic of Srpska (RS) is set to enhance its gas infrastructure with the launch of the Eastern Interconnection pipeline project, following a public procurement announcement by Sarajevo Gas. This initiative represents a significant investment, estimated at approximately €460 million, excluding VAT, marking it as one of the most substantial developments in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s gas sector in recent years. Companies interested in participating in the project have until January 28 to submit their applications via the national public procurement portal.
The proposed pipeline will establish a new east-west gas corridor across northern Bosnia and Herzegovina, commencing at Šepak on the Serbian border and concluding in Novi Grad near Croatia. The route will traverse vital urban and industrial centers, including Bijeljina, Banja Luka, and Prijedor. This expansion aims to significantly enhance the existing transmission network and facilitate access to natural gas for additional consumers in these regions.
Designed to bolster supply security and improve system resilience, the Eastern Interconnection is crucial for a country that lacks domestic natural gas production. Currently, Bosnia and Herzegovina relies entirely on imported gas sourced from Russia via Serbia through the TurkStream pipeline system. The leadership of Sarajevo Gas anticipates that this project will play a pivotal role in ensuring long-term stability of gas supplies to the Republic of Srpska while diversifying transit routes for future energy needs.
