In December 2025, Bosnia and Herzegovina reported a gross electricity production of 1,465 GWh, marking a modest increase from 1,459 GWh in the same month of the previous year. The contribution to this production came predominantly from thermal power plants, which accounted for 57.3%, while hydropower plants contributed 37.7%. The remaining 5% was generated from solar and wind sources.
The net production from hydropower facilities reached 549 GWh, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 6.2%. Conversely, thermal electricity generation saw a decline of 3.3%, totaling 753 GWh. Meanwhile, renewable energy sources, specifically wind and solar, experienced an increase of 8.9%, with production reaching 73 GWh.
Electricity trade figures indicated a downturn in both imports and exports. Imports decreased by 8.3%, amounting to 410 GWh, down from 447 GWh in December 2024. Exports also saw a slight reduction of 0.7%, totaling 568 GWh, compared to 572 GWh during the same period last year.
A closer look at fuel production reveals significant declines in lignite and brown coal outputs. Lignite production fell by 10.2%, resulting in a total of 527,000 tons. Similarly, brown coal output decreased by 6.8%, reaching 450,000 tons. Additionally, natural gas imports experienced a slight reduction of 2.5%, totaling 34.4 million cubic meters, down from 35.3 million cubic meters in December 2024.
