Operations at the Bitola Thermal Power Plant in North Macedonia have faced a setback following a technical failure that resulted in the shutdown of Unit 3 on April 14. The incident was triggered by a pipe rupture within the boiler system, necessitating an immediate disconnection from the national electricity grid to ensure safety and operational integrity.
In response to this disruption, the plant’s operator, ESM, has moved swiftly to mitigate potential impacts on electricity supply. Preparations are underway to bring Unit 1 back online, with plans for synchronization to the grid anticipated shortly. This proactive measure is critical as it aims to restore capacity and maintain stability within the national energy framework.
Prior to this incident, the Bitola facility was already operating at a diminished capacity due to favorable hydrological conditions and a decrease in electricity demand. The operational strategy had allowed the plant to function effectively with only one unit active. Despite the current challenges posed by Unit 3’s failure, this approach is likely to persist as repair works are conducted.
Authorities emphasize that activating an alternative unit is essential for ensuring a continuous electricity supply during the repair process.
