The Albanian Government has taken a significant step in enhancing its renewable energy landscape by approving two new projects that will collectively add 65 MW of capacity to the national electricity grid. This initiative, driven by local investors, reflects Albania’s ongoing commitment to diversify its energy sources and mitigate its dependence on hydropower, which has historically dominated its energy mix.

The primary project involves a 55 MW wind farm set to be constructed in the village of Mollaj, located in southeastern Albania. A consortium comprising renewable energy firm Albpower and construction company Favina, along with its subsidiary Favina 1, will oversee the development. The construction phase is anticipated to conclude within two years, after which the facility will operate under a concession agreement lasting 49 years.

In conjunction with the wind farm, a 10 MW solar power plant has also received approval. This project will be situated in Shupenze, a village in central-eastern Albania, and will be developed by local firm Gerti. The construction period for this solar installation is expected to last up to three years, followed by an operating concession that extends nearly five decades.

While the financial details surrounding these investments remain undisclosed, both projects are poised to enhance electricity supply security and contribute to a more balanced renewable energy portfolio for Albania. The government’s decision underscores its preference for involving domestic companies in the renewable energy sector’s expansion, fostering local economic growth while addressing energy needs.

As Albania seeks to integrate wind and solar power alongside its established hydropower capabilities, these newly approved initiatives are part of a broader strategy aimed at reducing vulnerability to fluctuating hydrological conditions. This diversification is essential for promoting long-term energy stability and ensuring a resilient energy future for the country.
