Representatives of the Ministry of Mining and Energy spoke with the Vice President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Miki Hataed, about the progress of the works on the construction of the desulphurization plant at the Thermal Power Plant Nikola Tesla A.

At the meeting, it was pointed out that the construction of the desulphurization plant (blocks A3-A6), is in the final phase with which is mostly financed by a loan from the Japan Agency for International Cooperation, which will bring the operation of the thermal power plant into line with limited values of the European Union by applying desulphurization technology of flue gases by the wet limestone process.

“We have ambitious goals in the process of decarbonizing the energy sector and we need new investments in energy infrastructure and environmental protection in order to obtain new capacities and modernize our thermal power plants in accordance with the highest environmental standards. Completing the construction of the desulfurization plant in TENT A is of great importance, which will reduce sulfur dioxide emissions from 4000 milligrams per cubic meter to less than 200 milligrams, and the emission of particulate matter from 50 to 20 milligrams per cubic meter. Japan is one of Serbia’s most important partners in the energy transition process and we will continue to deepen our cooperation,” said Veljko Kovačević, special adviser to the Minister of Mining and Energy.

Hataeda reiterated JICA’s strong support for the implementation of socio-economic reforms that are necessary in the process of Serbia’s membership in the European Union. He emphasized his satisfaction with JICA-E’s participation in the energy transition process in Serbia, as well as his readiness to support the implementation of new projects.
