The revitalized unit of the pump-storage hydropower plant Bajina Basta has successfully completed a 30-day trial run, and beginning on 1 March, state-owned power utility EPS will start the refurbishment of the second unit. Once the refurbishment of Serbia’s only pump-storage hydropower plant is complete, the reliability of the country’s electricity system will be greatly improved.

During the trial run, the first revitalized unit operated flawlessly in both pumping and turbine modes, under the supervision of experts from Japan’s Toshiba, as well as the local Nikola Tesla and Mihajlo Pupin Institutes.

EPS General Manager Dusan Zivkovic emphasized that the refurbishment of Bajina Basta is one of the most significant investments for EPS. It will ensure decades of reliable operation and make a substantial contribution to Serbia’s energy security. The plant is the only pump-storage hydropower plant in EPS’s system and plays a crucial role in providing energy reserves during periods of high electricity demand, droughts, or any electricity shortages.
