Regarding Western Balkans countries, market share of the largest electricity producers, in this case state-owned, is extremely high. In Kosovo, the share amounts to 100 %, with 93.6 % in Serbia. Montenegro follows with 85.3 % and North Macedonia with 70.8 %.
According to data published by Eurostat, the largest electricity producers are gradually losing their market shares in most European countries. This is particularly evident in southeastern Europe, where major electricity producers in Greece and Slovenia registered the highest declines in the period between 2007 and 2019. Greece recorded a 40.4 % drop (from 91.6 to 51.2 %), while the drop in Slovenia amounted to 29 % (from 82 to 53 %). A drop of 4 % was registered in Croatia (from 84 to 80 %), while Hungary recorded a slight decline of just 1 % – from 40.9 to 39.9 %. On the other hand, Romania is among three EU member states which have registered an increase of market share of their largest electricity producers. The share in Romania rose from 27.5 to 31.8 %.
