In order to become a carbon-neutral site, German car manufacturer Audi announced that it has commissioned a solar rooftop system with power output of 12 MW at its factory in Gyor, Hungary.
Hungarian subsidiary of German energy company E.ON was in charge of the project’s implementation, which included the installation of 36,400 solar panels atop the factory’s two logistics centers, covering the area of around 160,000 square meters. Audi said that this is the largest rooftop solar power plant in Europe.
With the new solar rooftop, Audi Hungaria has become a carbon-neutral site. Since 2012, the car manufacturer has been relying on a geothermal plant in Gyor for heating for part of its demand and compensating the remainder with bio-gas certificates. For emissions it cannot avoid, Audi purchases certified carbon credits.
