In 2024, solar energy accounted for 25% of Hungary’s electricity generation, the highest share among all European countries, according to the Hungarian Ministry of Energy. This performance outpaced other solar leaders like Greece and Spain, where solar energy made up 22% and 21% of electricity generation, respectively.

The Ministry also highlighted that on sunny days, Hungary’s electricity production becomes entirely carbon-free, thanks to the combined output of solar power and the Paks nuclear power plant.

As of early 2025, Hungary’s solar power capacity surpassed 7,550 MW, with 80% of this capacity added since 2020. Projections suggest that by 2030, Hungary’s solar capacity will reach 12,000 MW. Additionally, more than 300,000 households across the country now have solar panels installed.
