Hidroelectrica, a leading electricity producer in Romania, has secured a grant of €8.7 million from the Modernization Fund to enhance its energy storage capabilities. This funding is earmarked for a significant battery storage initiative at the Porțile de Fier II hydropower complex, marking a pivotal move in the company’s strategy to integrate advanced energy solutions into its operations.
The total investment for this battery storage project is projected to reach approximately €62 million. It will feature a storage capacity of 64 MW and 256 MWh, positioning it as one of the most sophisticated systems developed by Hidroelectrica to date. The integration of this technology with existing hydropower infrastructure aims to optimize costs and streamline deployment processes.
This initiative is particularly relevant as Romania continues to increase its share of renewable energy generation. The new storage facility is expected to play a crucial role in balancing electricity supply and demand, addressing the inherent variability associated with renewable sources. Effective energy storage solutions are becoming vital for maintaining system reliability and operational efficiency.
Hidroelectrica’s management has emphasized the necessity of such investments in light of growing renewable penetration within the national grid. The project is designed not only to enhance frequency regulation services but also to improve overall system responsiveness, ensuring that the electricity network can adapt swiftly to fluctuations in generation and consumption.
With an installed hydropower capacity exceeding 6.3 GW, along with additional wind energy assets, Hidroelectrica remains a cornerstone of Romania’s energy landscape. The company is actively engaged in efforts aimed at decarbonization and modernizing the grid, reinforcing its role as a key player in the region’s transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
