The Greek electricity distribution operator DEDDIE is making significant strides towards enhancing its operational efficiency through the implementation of a centralized data platform. This initiative aims to revolutionize the monitoring of electricity consumption across the nation, with an ambitious target set for the end of 2026 to cover approximately 2.3 million metering points.
At the forefront of this transformation is the newly established Meter Data Management platform, which became fully operational at the beginning of this year. This digital overhaul incorporates sophisticated smart metering technology alongside a revamped internal IT architecture, facilitating near-instantaneous data collection and processing. This shift marks a departure from traditional manual systems that often resulted in delays.
With this robust infrastructure now in place, DEDDIE is positioning itself to introduce more flexible pricing structures in the future. Although widespread adoption of demand response programs is not anticipated in the immediate term, the foundational technical capabilities are being established to support such initiatives as market dynamics and customer engagement evolve towards more proactive load management strategies.
Currently, certified monthly usage data is provided for around 225,000 high-consumption customers. However, this coverage is expected to expand significantly in the coming months as additional smart meters are integrated into the centralized system.
This scale-up is propelled by two concurrent developments: an accelerated rollout of new smart meters and a directive from Greece’s Ministry of Environment and Energy mandating DEDDIE to connect approximately 1.3 million previously installed smart meters to the upgraded platform within a five-month timeframe. Furthermore, plans are underway to install about one million additional smart meters by year-end, thereby enhancing both the reach and digital capabilities of the system.
