Greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union decreased by 2.9% in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, according to data published by Eurostat. Emissions fell from 969 million tons to 941 million tons.
In the first three months, households accounted for 24% of all emissions in the EU, followed by the manufacturing sector with 20%, electricity and gas with 19 %, agriculture with 13% and transportation and storage with 10%.
Data showed a decrease in first quarter emissions relative to the same period last year in five out of nine economic sectors, with the biggest decrease in electricity and gas supply at 12.3%.
The countries with the highest decrease in carbon emissions were Bulgaria with 15.2%, Estonia with 14.7% and Slovenia with 9.6%. The countries with the most increases in carbon emissions were Ireland (9.1%) and Latvia (7.5%).
