Bulgaria registered the 12% increase in carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel combustion (oil and oil products, natural gas, coal and peat) for energy use. That is the biggest increase in CO2 in the European Union in 2022, according to data published by the European statistics agency Eurostat.

2.4 Gt of carbon dioxide were emitted for energy use in EU in 2022, a 3% decrease compared to the previous year. CO2 emissions from energy use decreased in 17 EU countries. The largest decrease was registered in the Netherlands, by 13%. Portugal (+10) and Malta (+4%) had the highest increase after Bulgaria.

According to Eurostat, CO2 emissions from energy use are a major contributor to global warming and account for around 75 % of all man-made greenhouse gas emissions in the EU.
