The recent environmental impact assessment (EIA) of the Buk Bijela hydropower plant, located on the Drina River, has determined that the project is unlikely to pose any negative effects on Montenegro. This conclusion is particularly significant as it comes amidst ongoing conversations regarding the environmental ramifications of energy projects in the region.

Dušan Živković, the head of Elektroprivreda Srbije, stated that the findings of the analysis indicate that the implementation of the Buk Bijela project can proceed without endangering natural ecosystems. He reiterated a commitment to harnessing available resources in a responsible and sustainable manner, aiming to preserve environmental integrity for future generations.

The comprehensive assessment was conducted by a consortium of regional experts, addressing various environmental conditions, potential risks, and necessary mitigation strategies. The study encompasses both the construction and long-term operational phases of the hydropower facility, ensuring thorough consideration of environmental protection measures.

Notably, experts involved in the study confirmed that key protected areas in Montenegro, such as Durmitor National Park and Piva Nature Park, would remain unaffected by the project. The assessment also found no significant threats to biodiversity, water systems, or public health, aside from existing impacts associated with the nearby Piva hydropower plant.

Representatives from Elektroprivreda Crne Gore emphasized the importance of a constructive and cooperative approach to large-scale energy initiatives like Buk Bijela. They highlighted that with meticulous planning, technical and environmental challenges can be effectively managed, allowing for progress in energy investments while upholding stringent environmental standards.
