In a significant move to bolster its infrastructure, Romanian gas distributor Distrigaz Sud Retele has earmarked approximately €112 million for the modernization and expansion of its distribution system in 2025. This investment is pivotal as it aligns with the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance operational efficiency and safety within its network.
Of the total budget, around €71 million is designated for replacing outdated components and improving operational safety measures. The company is actively transitioning from steel pipelines to more durable polyethylene alternatives, which are expected to enhance technical performance. In 2025, the renewal efforts will encompass 162 kilometers of pipelines and service lines, alongside the replacement of approximately 15,500 pressure regulation and metering units, as well as over 201,000 gas meters.
The remaining €41 million, representing 37% of the annual budget, will be allocated to expansion initiatives aimed at connecting new consumers to the gas network. This includes the installation of 380 kilometers of new distribution lines and approximately 13,000 new connections, ultimately integrating an additional 46,300 customers into the system.
In addition to physical infrastructure improvements, Distrigaz Sud Retele is advancing its digital transformation agenda. The company has launched the ePortalDGSR customer platform, making it the first natural gas distributor in Romania to offer such a digital interface for customer engagement.
Since its entry into the energy market 21 years ago, Distrigaz Sud Retele has invested around €1.3 billion in its operations. Over this period, the length of its distribution network has nearly doubled from 14,200 kilometers to 24,483 kilometers. The company has rehabilitated approximately 8,936 kilometers of pipelines and increased the proportion of polyethylene infrastructure from 23% to 75%. Additionally, its customer base has expanded significantly to over 2.32 million connections, reflecting a substantial growth trajectory since its inception.
